December fills up quickly with parties, programs, and shopping lists. A daily Advent reading is one of the simplest ways to keep the Savior at the center, and Luke 2 is the perfect place to spend it. In one chapter you get the journey to Bethlehem, the angels, the shepherds, Simeon and Anna in the temple, and the boy Jesus teaching the elders.

Here’s how to turn Luke 2 into a 24-day countdown your whole family can keep up with.

Why Luke 2 works for Advent

Luke 2 is short enough to read a few verses a day and still finish by Christmas Eve. It also tells the story in order, so each day builds on the last. By the time you reach Christmas morning, your family has walked the whole way to Bethlehem together.

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

— Luke 2:11

How to set it up

  1. Pick a time. Breakfast, dinner, or right before bed. Same time every day is easier to remember.
  2. Pick a reader. Let a different family member read each night. Pre-readers can repeat a line after you.
  3. Keep it short. Read the day’s verses, ask one question, and you’re done in five minutes.
  4. Make it visible. Hang the day’s card on a string, a door, or the fridge so the story builds across the month.

A sample first week

Day Read Talk about
1 Luke 2:1–3 Why did everyone have to travel?
2 Luke 2:4–5 What might the journey have been like for Mary and Joseph?
3 Luke 2:6–7 Why was there no room at the inn?
4 Luke 2:8 What were the shepherds doing that night?
5 Luke 2:9–10 How do you think the shepherds felt when the angel came?
6 Luke 2:11–12 What sign did the angel give them?
7 Luke 2:13–14 What did the heavenly host say?

The rest of the month follows the shepherds to the manger, then Simeon and Anna in the temple, and ends with the boy Jesus in His Father’s house.

Ideas for different ages

  • Little ones: Act out the day’s verses with a toy nativity.
  • School-age kids: Have them draw one picture from each day’s reading.
  • Teens: Ask them to find one word or phrase that stood out and why.
  • Adults: Read the day’s verses again on your own and write one line of what you noticed.

Make Christmas Eve special

Save the last reading for Christmas Eve and read it by the tree with the lights low. If you’ve been hanging the cards, read a few of the earlier ones aloud too, so everyone sees the whole story come together.

And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

— Luke 2:20
